The mass air flow sensor MAF is used to measure the amount and temperature of air that is entering the engine at any one time. The MAF also incorporates an internal intake air temperature sensor which measures the temperature of the intake air. The first indicator that you might have a problem with the MAF is the presence of a check engine light CEL on your dashboard.
The check engine lamp can be caused by a wide variety of problems with the engine. You need to read the codes from the computer to get a starting clue as to what the problem is. However, the engine will not be operating at peak efficiency, and you will most likely experience a loss in power and a decrease in gas mileage as a result.
It's best to get the problem taken care of relatively quickly, as running the engine in this condition can potentially cause damage to other components like the catalytic converters. Vacuum leaks and other air leaks in the system can cause MAF sensor errors. If you have a crack or leak in your air intake downstream of the sensor, then the MAF will be sensing less air than the engine is actually receiving.
You should carefully inspect all of your hoses, clamps and intake tubes for air leaks prior to replacing the sensor. The MAF sensor red arrow is located between the air filter yellow arrow and the intake tube green arrow. Large Image Extra-Large Image. The sensor comes complete with the plastic tube it is housed in. While you can remove the sensor to attempt to clean it, if you are replacing the MAF it will arrive already in the tube.

The MAF is held in place by two clips to the air filter box red arrow, one shown, one below a single clamp to the intake tube yellow arrow and the wiring harness green arrow. Turn the locking ring on the harness red arrow counter clockwise; this will separate it from the connection on the MAF yellow arrow.
Separate it from the air filter lid by pulling back on the two clips red arrows.Data science interview questions github
Use a flathead screwdriver and unscrew the clamp to the intake tube red arrow. Push the MAF back on the plastic bellows connecting it to the intake tube red arrow. This will allow you to remove it from the air filter lid. Next slide it out from the bellows on the intake tube. This will free the MAF and housing from the vehicle red arrow. When you order a new MAF this piece is what you will receive.
Most people have received only moderate success with cleaning the MAF but it is an expensive part so you may want to try that first. If you attempt to clean the MAF do not use anything but MAF cleaner and never touch the sensor red arrow with your hands or anything metal.

Need to buy parts for this project?Fits the following, and chassis with 6 cylinder single cam gas engine. In my opinion, the 6 cylinder gas engine built from to is one of the best engines Mercedes has ever built.
Aside from a couple nagging problems common to these engines discussed later they have proven to be a strong, fuel efficient and very reliable automobile engine. If you choose to carry the run insurance kit I offer in your trunk, this engine will hardly ever leave you stranded, and if the engine computer starts to act up you should still be able to make it home with the aid of the mechanical fuel injection system.
I have seen these engines go overmiles only needing valve guides, water pumps, and a belt tensioner along the way. Get it for Free! This is available as a free add-on item.

In this manual I will outline the things you can do yourself with regular tools and common parts to make your engine run smoother and produce more power.
I see cars come in to my shop all the time that wont run due to very simple problems. I have had two Es that would literally not start due to bad spark plugs. I think in both cases the plugs had been in the engine for over 80, miles! Over 50 images are in the book for illustration and it is full of tips and tricks I have learned to make each job go easier and for the repairs to last longer.
Here is a summary of the subjects covered in the manual. The engine is a marvel of engineering and will take care of you if you take care of it. In the future I will be writing additional manuals for this engine and the chassis they are installed in. I will also be producing a number of kits in the near future to help the owner mechanic repair many of the common items that need replacing over the life of your Mercedes.

Is your M six cylinder engine not running as smoothly as it use to. These wires should be changed at 70, to 80, miles for smooth running and peak performance. As these popular six cylinder engines age we are finding they need more than just a set of plugs and normal tune up.
Repair Guide for the Following Models: E 2. Product Details Bundle Options. Two protective sleeves provided with tool.Mercedes suggests that special tools are required to adjust the mixture on the Bosch KE3-Jetronic CIS-E fuel injection, such as is used on the series motors.
The dedicated shade tree mechanic can do it, but needs to be well-informed first. These adjustments are intended to be followed by an actual exhaust gas CO check to ensure legality.
In order to reach the adjusting screw one must first remove the anti-tamper device required on US cars by Federal law. It is in a cast-aluminum tower just in front of the fuel distributor. Although Mercedes requires that it be removed and discarded, and after the adjustments be replaced by a new one, with care it can be re-used. Slotted-head screws are best because there will not be room for a socket. This avoids looking for an extractor. The old screws were 12mm long, but 10mm is still plenty of thread length.
They had blue Loctite on them. Wipe the area clean. Then I filed the remaining surface flat and chamfered the edges so I wouldn't get cut. It doesn't need to be long at all, even if you make the adjustment with the air cleaner in place 1.
This ensured that when I tightened the mounting screws the tower would be perfectly aligned for future adjustment. There are a couple of steps that are supposed to precede making this adjustment. If you wish to tinker, be sure to count carefully the number of quarter-turns you make in the setting, so you can go back if necessary. Even quarter-turns may be too much, so be careful! Turning the adjusting screw clockwise makes the mixture richer, while CCW makes it leaner.
Don't leave the wrench in the adjusting device 2, above when you start the engine, or it may fly out. To adjust, depress the wrench just enough to engage the adjusting screw 61 and turn it slowly. If the engine stalls, you pushed too far down!Log in or Sign up.
Mine is a little low and needs a gentle tweak. Peter CMar 12, Lift the air cleaner off, and look at the throttle cable where it joins the carb, there is a rotary shaft going through it with the butterfly plate that opens with you operate the throttle cable. Looking at the operating part again there will be an end stop with a screw that is the end stop,by turning the screw in the engine should speed up.

I had thought that the E in the model designation stood for Einspritz, the German for injection - is that right?
If it's a car, it will probably have a cat and closed loop fueling control - is the idle speed also controlled by the ECU? I'll take a picture, tomorrow, of mine. Hi Peter, only adjustment you can make if the ancillary components are ok is to the mixture adjustment screw, as mentioned in the top of the air filter, using a 3mm allen key. You need a co meter to make this adjustment.

I checked the brake booster a few months agoand wasnt that, i will have to get a cigar tomorrow and smoke the engine see if i can find a leak.
You're talking the cold start injector? Very possible, though it could just as likely be that injectro is leaking as the sensor acting up.
The injector is right there towards the front of the engine if you're wanting to pull it out and see if it's leaking or still spraying when the engine is hot. Stefan answered 7 years ago. I will check it out, I was actually referring to the cold temp sensor, if its saying its 30 below zero then it will dump fuel into the system, but the thing that gets me is that in idle its pretty much normalonly acts up in gear.

It can be worn out and become temperature sensitive to functioning, working well when engine is cold, but irratic when warm. The cool gas going into it complicates the picture because once you stop the car the gas warms up in the area and makes starting difficult until cool gas reaches it again, but it may not be cool enough anymore with a hot engine under it.

It has helped me more than anything else out there including MB Manuals. After rebuilding the entire ignition and Fuel system on my 89 E starting from cleaning the gas tank forward I still had a very poor running engine.
Turns out after following your suggestions that it runs great, mostly. The problem parts even though I changed out about everything from the fuel pumps and forward was the Fuel Regulator and EHA Valve both were leaking. I only had a multi-meter so I guessed with the EHA valve but ended up turning the screw an entire half turn up and then adjusted Lambda to your suggestion. This fixed the problem and the engine runs great. The problem I have now and was this way even before I started to rebuild everything is that the engine looses a lot of power when it is hot.
MAF Sensor Replacement
Say above And of course with AC on it has to drop into 1st to get off the line at all and any kind of acceleration it will do a hard down shift. It sputters a little or chokes off idle after restarting when its hot but that goes away and it runs smooth but just no power.
I have cleaned out the throttle body area that seems a little dirty and we will see if that helps. When cold and normal running temperature to about 80 it runs great and with expected power. Any ideas? I thought of bumping up the EHA valve a touch more but thought I would get some opinions before I keep messing with that.
Hey Dwight, Diagnosis over the internet is a tough one, so bare with me: - how's your O2 sensor? MB says a 4 second cranking time is within reason. When I start the car in the morning, it starts first time with no issues. After driving for a short period and the car gets to temperature, the following problems can occur; i When in traffic or at a stop light, the car revs can begin to stumble up and down and then stall.
After it stalls, I cannot start the car, it just cranks over and over again. I have to wait for the engine to cool down usually 45 minutes and then it will start. I usually have to put the pedal down so it does not stall.

This is basically the same problem I have been having since an engine replacement. I replaced the OVP relay but the problem has not gone away. Hey when I checked the part of the o2 sensor that was under the passenger seat, it was all moldy and stuff. I'm not sure if it still works or if I should replace it.
